At the Centre for Justice (CfJ), we recognize that environmental protection is a crucial aspect of safeguarding the fundamental rights of all citizens. A healthy environment is integral to the well-being of every individual, and it is our firm belief that the rights to clean air, water, and land must be protected for current and future generations. Our work in environmental advocacy focuses on addressing environmental degradation, promoting sustainable practices, and holding both governmental and private entities accountable for their role in environmental harm.
Our Mission in Environmental Advocacy
Our mission is to advocate for the right of all citizens to live in a safe and healthy environment. We strive to challenge violations of environmental laws, raise awareness of ecological issues, and promote policies that ensure sustainable development. Through legal action, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with environmental groups, CfJ is committed to environmental justice.
Legal Action for Environmental Protection
One of the most effective ways CfJ advocates for environmental protection is through public interest litigation (PIL). By using the power of the courts, we seek to compel government agencies and private companies to act in accordance with environmental laws and regulations. Our legal actions focus on ensuring that citizens have access to a clean and healthy environment, particularly in areas where industrial development, urbanization, and poor waste management practices threaten natural resources.
Recent Cases Filed by CfJ for Environmental Protection:
- Pallekadu Garbage Disposal Facility Case (2024)
In one of our recent landmark cases, CfJ filed a writ application in the Court of Appeal to address the issue of elephant deaths caused by toxic waste at the Pallekadu Garbage Disposal Facility in Oluvil. This facility, which serves the Ampara District, has led to the tragic deaths of several elephants due to improper waste disposal practices. The case was filed to compel the relevant authorities, including the Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Central Environmental Authority, to take immediate action to mitigate the risk posed by the facility to wildlife and the surrounding environment. We aim to ensure that proper waste management practices are put in place to protect both public health and the natural ecosystem. - Environmental Impact of Waste Management Practices
CfJ has filed several cases addressing environmental harm caused by improper waste disposal and hazardous practices. These cases seek to compel local authorities and private entities to implement proper waste management systems, prevent environmental degradation, and adhere to environmental standards set by law. Our efforts have focused on urban and rural areas alike, where waste management has been a persistent problem, impacting both public health and the environment.
Promoting Sustainable Development and Legal Compliance
In addition to filing legal cases, CfJ works to promote sustainable development practices by advocating for better environmental policies and regulatory frameworks. We actively engage with governmental bodies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to promote the following key objectives:
- Sustainable Waste Management: Advocating for comprehensive recycling programs, proper disposal facilities, and measures to reduce waste generation, particularly in urban areas where population density and waste production are high.
- Protection of Wildlife and Ecosystems: We strive to ensure that wildlife conservation is integrated into urban planning and development projects. Our legal actions and advocacy seek to prevent harmful activities such as illegal logging, poaching, and habitat destruction.
- Climate Change Mitigation: Supporting policies and practices that address the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. This includes advocating for reduced carbon emissions, greater reliance on renewable energy, and the protection of natural resources.
- Public Awareness and Education: Through campaigns and outreach programs, CfJ educates citizens about environmental issues, their rights to a clean environment, and how they can contribute to sustainable practices in their communities.
Why Environmental Protection Matters
Environmental protection is not just an ecological issue—it’s a fundamental human rights issue. A degraded environment threatens the right to health, food security, clean water, and a safe living space. The impact of environmental harm often falls disproportionately on marginalized communities, making it imperative for organizations like CfJ to advocate for their right to a safe and healthy environment.
How You Can Support Our Work
The fight for environmental justice requires collective action. CfJ invites individuals, communities, and organizations to join us in advocating for environmental protection. Whether through supporting our legal efforts, participating in our public awareness campaigns, or adopting sustainable practices, your involvement makes a difference. Together, we can ensure that the environment is preserved for future generations and that citizens’ rights to a healthy environment are protected.
